The Serious Bio

Amal Awad is a Sydney-based writer, journalist, author and public speaker. Amal is a regular contributor to SBS Life, and has written for such publications as ELLE and Frankie, and online portals like Daily Life, Sheilas and Junkie. Amal is also a casual producer for ABC Radio National.

Amal frequently writes and speaks about issues of society, religion and popular culture. She has addressed festivals, universities, youth groups and community organisations, and has appeared on national radio.

She published her debut novel Courting Samira – a tale of Muslim courtship and coming of age in the modern era – in 2010, which was a semi-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.

Amal recently contributed to the anthology Coming of Age: Growing up Muslim in Australia (Allen & Unwin, 2014), and her second novel, This Is How You Get Better, was published in March 2015.

She is currently researching her fourth book, a work of non-fiction that will focus on the lives of Arab women.
